The challenge
Since launching in 2013, Canva’s rapid growth to over 3,500 employees (and counting) created logistical challenges in its onboarding process. As a company rooted in visual communication, Canva understands the importance of first impressions. However, due to manual internal processes, it needed to begin preparations a month in advance to meet deadlines for delivering new devices and SWAG to each incoming Canvanaut.
Each computer was configured manually and shipped with assigned accessories to new hires, requiring two employees about one to two weeks per cohort of around 50 new users. Additionally, two other internal teams were responsible for sending welcome packs with practical items and SWAG to the same location.
This duplication of effort and disjointed shipments undermined the first impression Canva aimed to create and highlighted the need for a more streamlined onboarding process.
